PhD student
I obtained my B.Sc. in Biology from Universidad de Granada, Spain, and then completed my M.Sc. in Genetics at Universidad Autónoma de Barcelona, Spain. My interest in Population genetics started when I joined the University of Liverpool for a 1-year internship, where I studied the effects of transposable elements on the fitness of Drosophila simulans. Afterward, I joined the research group of Neda Barghi as a technician contributing to the setup and maintenance of D. simulans long-term experiments to investigate the dynamics of polygenic adaptation. Since March 2022, I am pursuing my PhD on the same research, supervised by Neda Barghi. Currently, I am utilizing time-series phenotypic data, such as gene expression, to infer when populations undergoing adaptation to a new environment reach the equilibrium.
During my PhD, I’ve become quite interested and significantly improved my skills in:
- Experimental design; e.g., time series phenotyping of multiple populations in common garden conditions.
- Statistical modeling and inference; e.g., mixed models applied to gene expression data.
- Drosophila husbandry; e.g., maintenance of large populations of flies (100,000 individuals) in laboratory conditions.
